Check out some of my favourite genealogical websites:

FreeBMD: FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records.

Commonwealth War Graves: Together with the tasks of structural and horticultural maintenance, the Commission is charged with keeping records of the 1.75 million Commonwealth war dead. At each cemetery and memorial you will find a register showing the service details and, in some cases, family details, of the men and women buried or commemorated there.

Ellis Island: American Family Immigration History Center® (AFIHC) makes the 25 million immigrant arrival records in the Ellis Island Archives available to everyone.

Ancestry dot com: Access to UK Census, BMD and Military Records , Receive Newsletters and record updates from the UK , Browse the UK Learning Centre for more help and advice  AND search all records from other Ancestry sites directly from Ancestry.co.uk including US, Canadian and Australian records .

Find a Grave: Thousands of contributors submit new listings, updates, corrections, photographs and virtual flowers every hour. When it comes to administrating, building and maintaining the site, Find A Grave is largely operated by its founder, Jim Tipton and friends.

PRO online: You can search for the records you need in a number of different databases. These include records held by The National Archives, their records digitised on their partners' websites, and records held in other archives. Searching is free, but there may be a charge to download documents.

RootsWeb: The primary purpose and function of RootsWeb.com is to connect people so that they can help each other and share genealogical research. Most resources on RootsWeb.com are designed to facilitate such connections. The hundreds of gigabytes of data on RootsWeb.com are a by-product of millions of online genealogists sharing research.

The Genealogist: Subscription website: voted Census and BMD site of the year in the 2008 Your Family Tree Awards, where it was praised for its collection of both census transcripts and original page images, and its clever search tools for birth, marriage and death records.
